JARRID Famous was hardly surprised he grabbed 37 rebounds in GlobalPort’s 102-94 win over Kia on Sunday in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
The herculean rebounding effort by the Batang Pier import was the most in the league in three decades and the third highest behind the all-time record of 45 rebounds hauled down by fellow import Michael Hackett of Ginebra in the 1985 Third Conference.
“My niche is rebounding and that’s what I love to do,” said the 6-foot-11 slotman, who came in averaging 21.6 boards per game. “I feel like every rebound is mine so every game I just try to grab them all.”
Famous, whose previous personal high was 28 in the team’s 111-101 loss to Ginebra earlier this month, did admit that luck was also a factor in reaching his total.
“I was lucky that some of the rebounds fell my way,” he said. “I was able to grab a bunch of them.”
Famous completed a 30-30 effort, scoring 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting on top of three blocks against 11 turnovers in 45 minutes as the Batang Pier moved closer to a quarterfinal berth after improving to a 6-4 win-loss card.
“We’re improving and we’re a young team,” he said. “We just have to go out there and work hard and we can compete with anybody.”
