PHOENIX Super LPG coach Jamike Jarin is confident that Johnathan Williams can atone from his struggles offensively in Game One of the PBA 48th Season Commissioner’s Cup.
Williams was limited to a conference-low 11 points on Wednesday during the Fuel Masters’ 82-79 defeat over Magnolia as he shot 4-of-11 from the field.
Williams though had his usual night on the glass as he collected 18 rebounds.
Jarin cites Magnolia's defense
Jarin credited Magnolia’s defense for Williams’ poor shooting night, while also keen on helping their import get his usual offensive groove strategically.
“You have to give credit to the Magnolia defense. We will make some adjustments. We will fine-tune it,” said Jarin.
“He is going to play better. Not just him but everybody else going into Game Two,” said Jarin.
Victolero eyes better defense vs Perkins
But while they were able to contain their opponent’s import, Magnolia coach Chito Victolero rued they didn’t do a better job against other Phoenix players led by Jason Perkins, who had 25 points in Game One.
Against Magnolia, Williams was limited to two offensive rebounds in a statistical department that he leads among imports who are still playing this conference.
“That’s our game plan also – to limit their import,” said Victolero. “We know that he dominated in their series against Meralco. We just need to limit his activity on the floor, limit his offensive rebounding, and contribution on the offensive end.”
“But we need to have a game plan also on Perkins. Perkins did a good job on helping their import. We need to watch the film and how we can contain Perkins and Jazul also. Let’s see the adjustments tomorrow,” said Victolero.
