THE trade between NorthPort and Barangay Ginebra set up a reunion between Batang Pier coach Pido Jarencio and former University of Santo Tomas players Jervy Cruz and Kevin Ferrer.
Jarencio coached Cruz and Ferrer in separate years during his stint with the Growling Tigers with Cruz leading the team to the 2006 UAAP championship.
Ferrer, meanwhile, suited up for Santo Tomas from 2011 to 2015 and advanced to the finals once with Jarencio at the helm.
“Unang una, masaya kasi ako. Mula umpisa, sa akin nanggaling ‘yan,” said Jarencio on Tuesday. “Pagdating sa PBA, hindi kami nagkasama. Ngayon, nagkasama kami. Siyempre, kahit papaano, kabisado na ako ng mga batang ‘yan.”
Jarencio believes the familiarity will do well for the Batang Pier, who are looking to sustain their momentum and keep their lofty standing after a 5-1 record going into their Wednesday match against Rain or Shine.
Jarencio also expects Cruz and Ferrer to show his mantra of 3 Ps – puso, pride, and palaban – to the Batang Pier.
“Alam na nila ‘yan. Kilala naman nila ako. Kabisado naman ako nung mga batang ‘yan. Ayoko lang ‘yung umaatras sa laban. Palaban naman ‘yang mga ‘yan,” said Jarencio.
Due to the trade being consummated on Tuesday, Jarencio said Cruz and Ferrer will not be available for Wednesday’s match against Rain or Shine where NorthPort (5-1) will be eyeing for a share of the lead with TNT.
Jarencio though said Cruz and Ferrer will start attending practices as soon as possible with NorthPort facing Blackwater on Saturday.
“Basta ako, positive ako sa nangyari. Para sa akin, makakatulong ‘yung mga players sa nakuha namin,” said Jarencio.
