THE persistent trade talks revolving around him is of no concern for Japeth Aguilar these days as he puts his complete focus on his stint with Gilas Pilipinas.
Although aware that he’s been the subject of trade rumors during this PBA conference break, the athletic 6-foot-9 slotman said he would rather put everything in the back of his mind at the moment.
“Hindi ko pa alam. Pero para sa akin sa national team muna ang focus ko. Hindi ko pa naman alam ang mangyayari,” Aguilar shared to Spin.ph prior to departing for Lithuania together with the entire national team for a two-week training camp.
Just last week, a high-ranking official of Barangay Ginebra intimated the team’s bid to begin a new round of talks to acquire the services of Aguilar from Globalport.
“Kung ibibigay ba si Japeth, gusting-gusto namin `yun,” said the official, who refused to be named pending the revival of a previous trade talks involving Aguilar that failed to materialize last January.
“Papahinga lang muna kami. Kakatapos pa lang naman ng conference eh. Matagal pa naman bago `yung Governors Cup,” added the same source.
During the break prior to the Commissioner's Cup, the former Western Kentucky University and Ateneo stalwart was already on his way to Ginebra until a top executive of San Miguel Corp. pulled the plug off on a multi-team, multi-player trade at the last minute.
Aguilar admitted he’s happy with Globalport, although there’s a bit of a disappointment following the Batang Pier’s failure to make the playoffs for the second straight conference.
“Happy rin naman ako sa Globalport. Maganda `yung samahan namin dun,” he said.
“Kaya doble kayod ako ngayon para matulungan `yung team na bumawi. Tulad ngayon disappointed ako, yung team kasi hindi masyado malayo ang narating,” added the son of former Ginebra center Peter.
But should the trade deal eventually push through, Aguilar said he will take it as a pro.
“Basta kung ano ang mangyari, handa ako,” he said. “Wala akong ibang tinitignan pa sa ngayon.”
Whether it be Ginebra or any other team, Aguilar said he’s ready to play.
“Wala naman. Basta ako trabaho lang muna,” said the national team member. “Sa akin basta kung saan ako maglaro, ibibigay ko `yung best ko. Yung lang muna ang motivation ko ngayon.”
