FROM hero to zero, Japeth Aguilar’s transformation came fast as Barangay Ginebra bowed to Meralco, 102-99, in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday night.
After he buried a stunning right-corner three-pointer that could’ve sent the game into overtime, the athletic Gin Kings forward let Meralco import Andre Emmett score the go-ahead basket for the Bolts.
“Crucial na hindi kami naka-stop sa import nila,” Aguilar said, although insisting he defended Emmett solidly when the prolific American guard scored the runner that gave the Bolts a 101-99 lead.
“Mahihirap yung mga binitawan nung import nila. Well contested naman pero talagang pumapasok.”
Aguilar also admitted not capitalizing on their foul to give against the Bolts.
“Actually may chance kami ‘nun magbigay ng foul, pero hindi kami nagbigay.”
That put to waste Aguilar’s own heroic effort when he took advantage of a broken play that was intended for their import in Orlando Johnson and Jiwan Kim in the previous possession that resulted in his wide-open triple that tied the game at 99 with 42.3 seconds left.
“Nag-space out lang talaga ako ‘nun,” Aguilar said. “Gusto ko lang sila mabigyan ng room then kinick-out sa amin at tutal kailangan rin naman namin ng three points, tinira ko na.”
