JAPETH Aguilar regretted not leading Barangay Ginebra to a win in the presence of Sonny Jaworski in Game Four of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals against San Miguel Beer on Thursday night.
The Gin Kings failed to follow up 95-87 win in Game Three last Tuesday as they came out with a flat start and played catch-up all game long to finish on the wrong end of a blowout.
Asked if he feels the Big J would be disappointed of their performance, Aguilar agreed.
“I'm sure, I'm sure. Eto yung team niya eh,” the Gin Kings star big man said. “Kumbaga yung sinimulan niya before... Sayang di namin nakuha yung panalo para sa kanya.”
“Nagsisi nga ako nung bandang huli kasi 'di man lang ako nakapag-hi,” he added, also referring to Jaworski’s fellow legend, Mon Fernandez. “They’re all-time greats and talagang idol talaga. Sa sobrang focus ko sa game di ko na sila nalapitan kanina. Pero it was really nice to see them there.”
Individually, Aguilar put on a show in front of the two icons as he poured in a game-high 31 points on 12-of-19 shooting, 13 rebounds, and four steals in 38 minutes, but couldn’t care less of his personal performance.
“I don't care about my stats,” the 6-foot-9 beanpole said. “I'm more concerned about the team winning. Ipagpapalit ko yung stats ko and everything basta manalo lang.”
“Ano lang ako kanina, talagang focus lang ako,” he added. “Mahirap kasi tinatry ko i-maintain yung same focus nung previous game, tina-try ko i-emulate kung anong ginawa kong routine.”
While seeking to sustain his showing, Aguilar should also get ample support aside from LA Tenorio in Game Five on Saturday when they try to stay alive in the series.
“As much as possible ita-try namin iextend yung series, one game at a time,” Aguilar said.
