Japeth Aguilar on becoming Ginebra's 'stretch-4': 'Open ako to expand my game like that'

    Jun 24, 2015

WITH the way he’s shooting the ball from way out in crucial moments of late, big man Japeth Aguilar expressed the possibility of embracing the three-point weapon in his arsenal.

For the second time in three games, the high-flying forward buried a clutch three-pointer for Barangay Ginebra, this time resulting in a 110-107 win over NLEX on the final day of eliminations in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday night.

His winning shot prompted Aguilar to entertain thoughts of becoming more of a “stretch-4” for the Gin Kings.

“Open ako to expand my game like that,” Aguilar said. “Pero dahil sa role ko dito sa team na ‘to, mas kailangan ako sa loob.”

The athletic forward, though, admitted he keeps himself ready in crucial situations by practicing his three-point shooting during training.

“Ine-ensayo ko rin talaga yung mga three-point shots ko, pero mostly talaga sa loob ako naglalaro.”

The shot was his third clutch triple in the last two seasons. The first came in a win against Talk ‘N Text in the Philippine Cup last season, followed by another one against Meralco in a 102-99 loss just two Sundays ago.

“Last time natalo kami,” recalled Aguilar, who’s glad his heroics resulted in a victory this time.

But he deflected credit to his teammates Sol Mercado, LA Tenorio, and Jiwan Kim, who also came through down the stretch for the league’s most popular ballclub.

In all, eight Gin Kings scored at least seven points.

“I’m really happy for my teammates because this game showed a lot of character from us,” Aguilar said.
