Japeth Aguilar says best yet to come for Ginebra, braces for 'emotional game' vs Marc Pingris, Star

GINEBRA’S frontcourt put on a dominant show against Phoenix after a 105-92 win on Wednesday, but Japeth Aguilar was quick to note that the Gin Kings have yet to reach their full potential as they are still learning to play with Greg Slaughter back in the fold.

Aguilar joined forces with Slaughter, Joe Devance, and import Justin Brownlee down low in a game where they dominated the boards, 76-47, over Phoenix as the Gin Kings won their fifth straight to grab a share of the lead with Meralco (5-1) in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The high-flyer also imposed his size, scoring 15 of his 19 points in the first half and collaring 13 rebounds while swatting four shots to set the tone for the Gin Kings. Still, Aguilar believes the best is yet to come as Ginebra continues to jell with Slaughter around.

"We're still learning to play with Greg. Nagi-improve pa kami around him," said Aguilar.

"I think for me nage-evolve pa offense ni coach (Tim Cone). As a player nakaka-excite talaga kasi you're having joy of playing basketball at the same time you're learning a lot. Everybody loves playing with each other," he added.

That same mentality will help Ginebra as it enters a tough stretch, beginning with an anticipated battle against rival Star Hotshots.

The 30-year-old Aguilar is looking forward to the match on Sunday, where they will face comebacking Marc Pingris.

"They're also one of the hottest teams ngayon. Bumalik na rin si Marc Pingris. we all know he is the captain dun. It's gonna be an emotional game, we just need to be ready," he said.
