JAMIKE Jarin will be reunited with his former players at Ateneo, some of whom he had coached as early as high school, once he assumes his new position as assistant coach at Phoenix in the PBA.

Jarin and Rich Alvarez on Tuesday were named the new assistant of Topex Robinson at Phoenix, which has a good number of players from Ateneo he had coached from 1998 to 2011 in both the seniors and juniors division.

Even Phoenix team manager Paolo Bugia and his fellow new hire Alvarez were part of the long list of players that Jarin coached at Ateneo.

“It’s going to be a reunion of some sorts,” Jarin told SPIN.ph shortly after news of his appointment came out.

“I’ve known boss Paolo Bugia since he was in high school. I coached him in high school. And I was able to coach him also in college for five years together with Rich Alvarez. We won a championship that time with coach Joel Banal,” said Jarin, referring to the 2002 UAAP championship.

JC Intal and Justin Chua were also his former players when he was an assistant coach under Norman Black, while Mike Gamboa was also a former Jarin player in a Blue Eaglets side that won a pair of UAAP juniors titles.

“I’m very excited with familiar faces and I’m also excited to work with Matthew Wright, Brian Heruela, Calvin Abueva, Alex Mallari, and the rest of the players. I’m in a good spot in terms of familiarity,” said Jarin.

“God is good for all the blessings he has showered upon me and my family. I’d like to thank the management of Phoenix headed by Dennis Uy, Atty. [Raymond] Zorilla, and boss Paolo Bugia. Most gracious thanks to coach Topex Robinson for picking me as one of his deputies and help him out for this coming season of the PBA,” said Jarin.

Jarin has already been introduced to the team, and will meet them for the first time in the bubble in Clark, Pampanga. The former Meralco assistant coach looks forward to be part of the resumption of the PBA season during the pandemic.

“It’s going to be very different. Right now, it’s going to be a sprint. I feel that it’s going to be very exciting for players and especially for the Filipino people that they will have an opportunity to watch basketball again,” Jarin said.
