JAMES Yap has been ruled out of Purefoods' game against expansion team KIA Carnival because of a sore left knee, which he hurt during the Hotshots’ 71-78 loss to Rain or Shine in Dipolog City.
The 6-foot-2 Yap had an MRI (magnetic resonance imagine) on his left knee on Tuesday morning, with initial reading showing slight swelling on his left knee.
“Wala namang nakitang major (injury or damage), just minimal swelling, which is typical na may nangyari nga, pero not so major,” Purefoods Star physiotherapist Nick Ocampo told Spin.ph during the team’s practice at the Ronac gym in San Juan.
The team’s other physiotherapist Arcee Cua was busy in practice supervising the Purefoods forward's therapy and ice treatment.
“May ice saka may gagawin na konting strengthening si Arcee dahil nagkaroon ng shut down sa quads (quadriceps) niya (Yap) dahil hindi siya nag-eensayo,” explained the soft-spoken Ocampo.
“He’s also doing the foam roller, just normal release ng muscles. Routine na namin 'yan for all the players.”
The former University of the East standout said he may have twisted his left knee when he tried to untangle himself from Rain or Shine guard Chris Tiu after a rebound scramble in the first quarter.
“First time ito (knee injury) sa kaliwa. Nag-twist ito ng konti nung patayo na ako pero nadaganan ni Chris Tiu. Pero nilaro ko pa nung third quarter,” recalled Yap.
Yap said he played through the injury briefly in the third canto, but when he felt a sharp pain in his left knee after missing a jump shot, he asked Purefoods Star coach Tim Cone to take him out of the game.
“Tinanong ako ni coach kung kaya ko pa. Eh sa isip ko naman kaya ko pa, pero nung nag-jump shot ako, masakit na. So dun ko na sinabi kay coach mag-sub na ako,” he added.
The two-time league MVP played just 15 minutes in the team’s first loss in the Commissioner’s Cup, scoring a solitary point while going 0-of-6 from the field. He also had two rebounds and one assist.
The pride of Escalante, Negros Occidental will be joining Peter June Simon on the injured list. Simon has been limited to a single appearance in the tournament by back spasm.
