James Yap calls players' huddle in bid to turn things around for slumping San Mig

    Feb 24, 2013

SOMETHING'S terribly wrong with defending champion San Mig Coffee, and James Yap wants the players to figure it out among themselves.

The usually reserved San Mig superstar said he will call for a huddle among the players ahead of Sunday's match against Talk 'N Text, hopefully to find answers for a perplexing slide that has seen the Mixers lose their first three matches in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.

“Kailangan talaga naming mag-usap before the game tonight. Pag-uusap kasi reminder na lang yan, professional na kami,” the two-time MVP told on Sunday morning. “Alam na namin nangyayari sa court: 0-3 kami ngayon, siguro kailangan na naming magising."

Yap said he has already talked to Marc Pingris, the other senior leader in the team, to discuss what he felt was wrong with the team's performance after an embarrassing 65-93 loss to Rain or Shine on Friday night.

Now it's time to involve the rest of the players.

“After our last game sinabi ko kay Ping (Marc Pingris) kung ano ang napapansin kong kulang (sa aming players),” said Yap, who has been struggling himself with a hip injury. "So 'yun iyong dapat naming pag-usapan, kung ano yung problema?”

The Mixers are coming off a semifinal exit in the Philippine Cup and have found it hard to get their act together after changes in the roster that led to the departure of Jonas Villanueva as well as a hasty import change that brought in former best import Denzel Bowles.

“Low morale talaga kami ... nawala yung gigil,” said Yap.

As for his own injury problems, Yap said: "Kung kaya, pipilitin kung ibigay ang 100 percent."
