PBA commissioner Chito Salud levied a hefty P150,000 fine on Talk ‘N Text’s mercurial import Ivan Johnson following his 'unsportsmanlike' bump on Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao in Game One of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals.
Emerging from a brief meeting with Johnson on Thursday at the PBA office that lasted no more than 15 minutes, Salud said the former Atlanta Hawks forward “failed to exercise due care to prevent the contact on coach Guiao.”
“Johnson, who was not in pursuit of the ball or involved in any spontaneous action at or near the premises of the Rain or Shine bench, could have avoided running into Coach Guiao with the exercise of ordinary care and caution,” Salud said in an official statement released after the meeting.
Johnson insisted during the meeting that the contact was merely accidental - a stand Salud was quick to brush off after a review of the controversial incident.
“The contact was clearly unprovoked and avoidable. Upon repeated review, we find no merit in Johnson's assertion that it was accidental and not intentional.”
Salud classified Johnson’s bump on the outspoken Rain or Shine coach as “unsportsmanlike."
