NICO Salva made quite an impression with a solid game off the Meralco bench on Wednesday, but he also drew second looks with his hairstyle.
The journeyman forward sported a unique undercut that was kept in place by a slim headband when he scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go with two boards, two assists, and one block in 18 minutes in their 116-103 win over Columbian Dyip in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
“Kailangan ko lang talian, kasi kung hindi, lilipad yung buhok,” Salva said with a chuckle. “Manipis, lilipad, yun lang. Halata ba 'yung band? Kasi medyo mahaba eh, kasi kung hindi, para lang hindi ako ma-distract, para hindi gumaganun-ganun sa mukha ko yung hair.
“Parang mukhang Tarzan eh,” he added on what he would call his look.
While joked about his hairstyle, the Ateneo product was all business in the game, scoring five of his output in the final frame where the Bolts pulled away from a tight game.
“My role was to mag-relieve kay JD (Dillinger), so I just wanted to make sure na I’m a positive sa team may it be on defense o sa scoring,” Salva said. “Praise God na nakatulong ako.”
“There are times I have to read the situation – if you need to score,” he added. “Titingnan ko rin yung match-up ko, I just read the situation when I need to be aggressive or when I have to look for my teammates to make that extra pass, depende lang sa situations.”
Salva was also inspired by the heroic performance of import Arinze Onuaku, who hardly looked like he was coming off sickbay due to a bum stomach.
“Oo, he came from the hospital, but then he was going hard,” Salva said. “It’s my first time to play with him in a real game. I was told he’s a game player, so I wanted to see rin for myself na pagka game na, iba yung energy niya, so we’re very fortunate to have him.”
