THE management of San Mig has categorically denied trying to lure Luigi Trillo to be one of former mentor Tim Cone's assistant coaches following his surprise exit from Alaska.

San Mig governor Rene Pardo admitted the team is currently looking at a shortlist of candidates in its bid to fill vacancies in the coaching staff left by Jeffrey Cariaso and Olsen Racela, who both transferred to Barangay Ginebra before the start of the PBA Governors Cup.

Trillo, the reigning Coach of the Year, is not on the list, Pardo said.

“May shortlist kami ng mga candidates, pero it’s with Tim (Cone) eh. We leave it up to him to decide, pero I am sure wala si Luigi dun,” said Pardo.

The outspoken team official said no member of the San Mig coaching staff and management has broached the idea of taking in Trillo even after the Aces formally announced the resignation of the young coach who led the team to last year's Commissioner's Cup title.

“Wala. He is not part of the choices. We will make announcement on who will join our coaching staff the soonest, pero wala si Luigi dun,” he added.

Pardo did not specify the reason why they are not keen on hiring Trillo, but a source from the team bared his previous sideline brushes with both Pardo and Cone have a lot to do with it.

It will be recalled that Pardo and Trillo recently engaged in a shouting match in the sidelines during San Mig's playoff match against Alaska last April 26. [See video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88s0Rk0dl3A]

Trillo also had a well-publicized spat with his former mentor Cone in a tune-up game last year.

“He has issues with the team before. So medyo may problema talaga tayo dun,” said the source. “It’s not an issue of professionalism. Pero syempre, may friction na eh. Why will you still hire him?”

Pardo denied it was his decision to leave out Trillo from the San Mig search, saying the decision-making in the hiring of assistant coaches has been left entirely to Cone.

The longtime San Mig governor also revealed that although the team is currently in need of two assistants, it will only take in one for this conference.

“Isa lang muna kukunin namin sa ngayon. Pero sabi ko nga, lahat depende kay Tim. Kung ano desisyon niya, yun lang susundin,” he added.
