AS far as the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is concerned, Chot Reyes is still part of the reckoning in the search for the head coach of the Philippine team.
SBP executive director Sonny Barrios made this clear on Thursday in the wake of news that Gilas Pilipinas has been disbanded after the national basketball body headed by Manny V. Pangilinan formed a selection panel to 'search and appoint' the coach and members of the Philippine team.
Barrios clarified that Reyes' name wasn't even mentioned - nor his status tackled - during the SBP board meeting on Tuesday that laid down the groundworks for the formation of the Philippine men's team for the 2015 Fiba Asia championship, which serves as the qualifier for the Rio Olympic Games.
"There was no such discussion (in the SBP board meeting)," Barrios, a former PBA commissioner, told Spin.ph. "We never discussed changing Chot. In fact, Chot's name wasn't even mentioned during the discussion."
Instead, Barrios said what the SBP board decided on Tuesday was to form two selection committees for the formation of two national teams - one for the Seaba tournament in either March or April and another for the Fiba-Asia championships set in late August in China.
Standouts from the amateur and college ranks will likely be tapped for the Seaba, which will serve as the qualifier for the Fiba-Asia championships where PBA players will once again lead the campaign.
By forming the committees, Barrios said the SBP has done away with the practice of simply appointing the coaches of the different national teams.
"There is now a process, as opposed to before when we simply chose the coaches," he said. "That is part of the mandate of our president (Pangilinan) to make all the moves of the SBP consultative and participatory."
When it comes to the Fiba-Asia, a selection committee made up of representatives from the PBA, D-League and the SBP will make a short list of candidates for coaches. The final recommendation will then be forwarded to the SBP executive committee for the final decision.
The SBP execom is made up of chairman Oscar Moreno, Pangilinan, vice-chairman Ricky Vargas, vice-president Al Panlilio, and Barrios.
Barrios said the final choice for Gilas coach will depend on the recommendations of the selection committee and the decision of the SBP execom - the reason he doesn't rule out a re-appointment for Reyes.
"For all we know, he may still be picked by the board," Barrios said.
Asked what Reyes' status is at present, Barrios said: "He's not automatically out, he's also not automatically in. For that matter, nobody's automatically in or out."
