KAPAG sinabi sa larong kalye na wala kang respeto ay dapat matuwa ka!
It means being disrespectful, but in a good way. It connotes confidence in playing alongside the established sandlot legends. It means irreverence.
This is what rookie sensation Terrence Romeo personifies.
Walang takot. Walang galang sa mga tinaguriang superstars ng Philippine basketball.
Hopefully the adulation doesn't get into the head of this 21-year-old who is in a position to redefine the scoring guard position in the PBA.
Terrence, who grew up in Cavite but traces his roots to Cebu where his father William is from, credits his old man's wisdom for the early success he is reaping.
“Payo ng papa ko kailangan buo yung loob ko. Dapat huwag ako matatakot sa magiging result as long as alam ko na tama yung ginagawa ko,” said the former FEU star.
Many hoops fans may not exactly like his guts but the irreverent Romeo vows there will be no let up as he takes the PBA by storm.
“Kasi kapag inisip ko na dapat mag-ingat ako baka ma-injure ako. Kailangan di ko isipin na baka makasakit ako o ako masaktan kasi hindi ko maibibigay yung one hundred percent ko.”
Not since the late great Arnie Tuadles entered the PBA in 1979 have we seen a scoring binge like this from a rookie in the pro league's long history.
Not until the brash Terrence Romeo decided at the last minute to join the 2014 PBA Draft and become the fifth pick overall by GlobalPort.
His 34-point explosion in his debut is still being talked about in a league that seem to be inhabited mostly by "fattened" players who seem unwilling to dish out the kind of game fans pay to watch.
But all this can change if Romeo can continue to remain unaffected by the adulation that usually spoils many of the current breed of PBA stars.
