STAR player James Yap took the `backseat’ again for San Mig Super Coffee.
The shooting guard failed to suit up in the Mixers’ crucial PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup match against Air21 on Saturday after being bothered by back spasm the whole week.
But the 6-foot-2 Yap said his latest injury is not as serious as the back problem he had last season.
“I think kailangan lang ipahinga ito (back). Tolerable naman `yung pain. In fact, nag-practice pa nga ako Friday pero di pa kaya eh,” Yap told a handful of sports scribes after the game which the Mixers won, 67-60.
Yap said he knows every game is vital for San Mig’s playoff hopes, which is why he has been religiously going through treatment in the hopes of returning to action by next Wednesday when the Mixers play Petron Boosters.
“Nung game kasi against Ginebra, after nun, may naramdaman ako sa likod ko. Nag break kami next day, eh medyo sumakit na, tapos tuloy-tuloy na. Sana makalaro ako next week,” he said.
“Gusto ko talaga maglaro. Ayaw ko nagpapahinga ako kasi mga five days na akong di nagpa-practice. nakakabagot.”
Aside from his current bout with back spasm, the pride of Escalante, Negros Occidental is also dealing with an inflamed right elbow.
He has actually been wearing a protective rubber suit on his elbow this season.
The injury-plagued two-time league MVP is averaging 14.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists through nine games in the All-Filipino Cup.
