NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez rued his team’s inconsistent performance has been preventing the Road Warriors from joining the PBA’s elite.

The Road Warriors’ fluctuating showing was evident in their 85-80 loss to Tropang TNT in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday, which dropped them to a 3-4 win-loss record.

Supposedly riding the momentum of their 104-99 victory over Meralco just last Friday, the Road Warriors instead started sluggishly against the Texters and fell into a deep 27-point hole, before managing to make comeback that fell short.

“It's more of our consistency,” Fernandez said. “The players' mental preparation has to be there every game, and it's just a matter of executing our game plan.

“Konting konti pa na push para maging consistent kami,” he added. “We're trying to make things so that we'll be consistent. It will take time, but we'll get there.”

Fernandez felt the Road Warriors, despite playing in their second game in three days, were fresh enough to get off to a great start against their sister squad.

“Wala naman kaming ginawa para mapagod ang players namin,” Fernandez said. “We just had a walkthrough yesterday.”

“Maybe it's more of the mental preparation of my players, kasi flat na flat eh,” he added. “We tried to mix up the rotations, at least we came back, but it's a flat start and we just have to learn from that.”

The Road Warriors’ offense looked fine as Al Thornton carried most of the load with 35 points, but the team’s defense looked suspect, particularly when they went down, 42-15, early in the second period.

“We're looking at our defense; it was flat sa first half kaya nabaon kami,” Fernandez said. “We have to start ng maayos.”
