Cone not too concerned after Ginebra goes 0-for-14 from beyond three-point arc

IN this age where three-point shooting is king and a weapon being banked on as much as it has ever been before, one can still find success without being, well, spot-on from behind the arc.

Barangay Ginebra proved it on Sunday night when it emerged victorious against Rain or Shine, 81-74, despite missing all its 14 attempts from deep in their PBA Philippine Cup matchup.

Gin Kings coach Tim Cone described it an “ugly win” as they turned to their defense that limited the E-Painters to a horrible 26-percent shooting to eke out the result, their first win of Season 42.

Ginebra's defense also held Rain or Shine without a basket in the game's final 4:07.

“It's tough to win a game when you shoot zero-of-fourteen from the three-point line,” the champion coach said. “It's a credit to our defense and our mentality to grind out a win.”

According to chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III, the 14 misses was the fifth most attempts without a make by a team in league history, and the second most that resulted in victory.

Coincidentally, Rain or Shine, took the most three-point tries without a conversion, yet still came out with a win as it missed – believe it or not – all its 25 attempts from beyond the arc in a win last October 2014.

But Cone is well aware these types of wins are hard to come by and he is hoping the Gin Kings learn from it.

“Hopefully we shoot the ball a little better as we move forward,” the American coach said. “But right now, we'll take these kinds of wins. These are the kind of games that we have to learn to play and win.”

“We'll continue to work on it in practice a little bit, and we'll get better at it,” he added.
