KNOWN for his nifty passing and court vision, Kevin Quiambao just dished off one perfect assist to Rain or Shine.

Coach Yeng Guiao disclosed how the former two-time UAAP MVP out of La Salle gave import Jaylen Johson a high mark when the Elasto Painters were trying to scout the 32-year-old American from University of Louisville.

Johnson and Quiambao were former teammates with the Goyang Sono Skygunners in the Korean Basketball League.

“It’s a good thing we scouted him (Johnson) through KQ,” said Guiao, which brought a big smile on the face of Johnson upon hearing it.

“We asked for KQ’s inputs on Jaylen. And he guaranteed that he’s a good dancer. And we took him because of that,” Guiao added in jest, obviously referring to the import’s penchant to dance when celebrating following a basket.

And Johnson has been playing good as advertised as he finished with big numbers of 35 points, 21 rebounds, and two blocked shots to lead Rain or Shine past a rallying Converge side, 120-111, for its sixth straight win in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The 6-foot-9 Johnson came through with 11 points in the fourth quarter in a stretch that helped the Elasto Painters survived a FiberXers’ comeback from 23 points down.

The win extended the team’s record number of wins to start a conference and kept them on top of the leaderboard.

Johnson admitted Quiambao, recently named KBL Rookie of the Year, paved the way for him to end up at Rain or Shine.

Of course, Elasto Painters’ lead deputy Caloy Garcia also serves as part of the coaching staff of Topex Robinson at La Salle, which Quiambao steered to a UAAP championship in 2023.

“KQ caught me in some practice in South Korea. KQ called me if I want to be on the phone (with Rain or Shine), and from there, it has been a great day ever since,” said the jolly Rain or Shine import.

“Shout out to KQ for you to be aware also.”
