RAIN or Shine earned the distinction as the first team to inflict a loss on Petron in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine after hacking out a 99-95 win in overtime four days before Christmas.
But unknown to many, the Elasto Painters went to war with the league’s No. 1 team uncertain about how to deal with their battle plan.
Coach Yeng Guiao once again fell prey to the monstrous traffic that commonly mars the holiday rush in the Big City as he failed to show up for the team’s pre-game huddle on Saturday afternoon.
They Said It!
“Ala una ako umalis ng Pampanga. Nakarating ako sa MOA ala sais na." -Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao
The fiery mentor arrived at the Rain or Shine dugout five minutes before the game against Petron, at which time the Elasto Painters were almost through with their pre-game warm-up.
“Naipit ako ng traffic eh. Ang tindi ng traffic papuntang MOA,” Guiao bared to Spin.ph.
“Ala una ako umalis ng Pampanga. Nakarating ako sa MOA ala sais na,” added the congressman from the first district of Pampanga, pointing out the normal travel time from Pampanga to the plush arena in Pasay is usually no more than two-and-a-half hours.
Since he was not able to make it on time, Guiao had to send his pre-game notes to the team by making a call to first assistant Caloy Garcia.
“Sabi kasi ni coach. Ma-le-late nga daw siya. Kaya kami na lang nag-huddle. Tapos tinanong niya ko kung ako na raw ba mag-decide sa play namin,” Garcia said.
“Ready naman kami pag ganun. Saka parang physically absent lang si coach nun, pero `yung mga command niya sa players, nai-relay naman namin ng maigi,” added the Rain or Shine deputy.
But Guiao eventually made it to the game and steered the Elasto Painters to the morale-boosting win after trailing by as much as 14 points in the first half.
Guiao once came late too, in a Rain or Shine game due to heavy traffic, which incidentally was held at the same playing venue in Pasay.
But the fiery mentor was very satisfied with how the Elasto Painters clawed their way back from an early double-digit deficit and win the game considering the team was the heavy underdog against the previously unbeaten Boosters.
“Talagang trinabaho namin `yung laro na yun. We can’t afford to lose that, bababa na kami ng husto sa standings,” he said as Rain or Shine was coming off a two-game slide prior to the win over Petron.
“Besides, magandang morale boost `yun for us. Beating Petron and dealing them their first loss is big.”
