THERE’S really not much you won’t do for Ginebra when you’re among its legions of diehard fans.
Take the case of Jumar Mendoza, a high school teacher who turned as attentive as a student when he saw the 'Bring Home the Kings' promo commercial on TV - a contest that requires you to get all five collectible figures of the featured Gin Kings stars to give you a chance to rub elbows with them.
The 28-year-old Mendoza, who teaches Math at San Francisco High School in Quezon City, immediately called the hotline and asked how he could avail of the promo, finding out he had to buy a number a of Ginebra products, the caps from which were traded to redeem the collectible figures of Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, LA Tenorio, Mark Caguioa, and Jayjay Helterbrand.
“Nagpainom ako kaagad sa mga kamaganak ko,” he recounted in a chat with SPIN.ph after eventually ending up as one of the winners of the contest that culminated with the meet-and-greet last Friday.
Mendoza said he scoured eight Puregold grocery store branches to complete the collectible figures in just one day.
“Walong oras ako umikot, kahit trapik,” he admitted.
Mendoza said he has been a diehard since he was in Grade 2, inheriting the fandom from his grandfather.
Mendoza would go as far as postponing his tutorial sessions when it coincided with Ginebra games, and would reward students of bonus points in exams after a Ginebra win and depending on how many points the lead would be.
So it seems his students are enjoying a surplus of extra points nowadays with Ginebra’s performance in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
