A RED-HOT Alaska team handed Talk ‘N Text its worst loss of the season, 92-69, to maintain its immaculate slate in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Aces took a six-point lead at the half before putting the game to bed in the third period behind a huge run in a stretch where the Tropang Texters went a horrific 2-of-21 from the field.
The third period saw Talk ‘N Text score just five points as the boys of coach Norman Black just couldn’t convert any of their shots from the perimeter or inside the shaded lane.
By the time it ended, the Aces held an insurmountable 73-44 bubble.
“We’re getting Talk ‘N Text, which is still not 100 percent. I thought we did a good job on (import Keith) Benson,” said Trillo, whose team erected its biggest lead at 78-47 on a three-pointer by Dondon Hontiveros.
"I was really scared that when he wasn’t in foul trouble, he’ll help. But we got him out of his flow."
The Aces improved to a league-best 5-0 while the Tropang Texters dropped to 2-3. Talk ‘N Text has lost four of its last seven matchups against Alaska this season, with the Aces earning the distinction as the only team with a winning record against the reigning Philippine Cup champions.
Black’s squad finished the game shooting just 22-of-76 overall or 28.9 percent.
Talk ‘N Text’s five third-quarter points equalled its second-lowest output for a quarter in franchise history and at the same time, tying the ninth lowest production in a quarter in league history.
The Manny V. Pangilinan-owned franchise actually owns the all-time lowest field goal in a quarter after going just 1-of-21 in 2001 when the team, then known as Mobiline, played against Sta. Lucia.
Robert Dozier had another complete game for the Aces with 23 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and two blocks, while Cyrus Baguio scored seven of his 17 points in the pivotal third period and went on to earn Best Player honors.
Benson was the only bright spot for the outplayed Tropang Texters after finishing with 27 points, 14 rebounds, two steals and one block.
Jason Castro, Jimmy Alapag and Larry Fonacier combined for just 17 points on a combined 4-of-19 shooting.
