RAIN or Shine handed Phoenix Pulse its first loss of the season after posting a 98-94 overtime win on Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Heroes were aplenty as the Elastopainters improved to a league-best 6-1 (win-loss), extended their win streak to four games, and, this early, sealed a place in the playoffs.
Rey Nambatac broke a 92-92 deadlock in overtime while Mark Borboran hit a runner in the lane with the shotclock running down to seal the victory.
Beau Belga had 16 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Kris Rosales scored 16 points in his best game as a Rain or Shine player.
“Another good win for us,” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia. “Phoenix came back and we had a good lead but they didn’t stop. That’s probably why they are on top. They never gave up and they fought their hearts out.”
“We just hit the big shots in the end. The nice thing about our win today is that just the way we want it. When we win, we want different players stepping up,” said Garcia.
Rain or Shine went on a 14-0 run to grab a 70-56 lead, the biggest in the game, but Phoenix Pulse came storming back with Jason Perkins converting a lay-up with 13.1 seconds left in the match to tie the game at 87.
James Yap missed a stepback three at the end of regulation.
Phoenix's first loss in six games spoiled Perkins’ career-high 27-point output for the Fuel Masters. Calvin Abueva added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
