JAYJAY Helterbrand put together a triple-double to set the tone as Barangay Ginebra's greats beat Purefoods' legends, 97-89, on Sunday night in the Return of the Rivals exhibition game.
Helterbrand, the youngest among the players in the roster at 42, had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a game that was still tied at halftime before the Gin Kings stepped on the gas in the second half.
Vince Hizon also made a big impact in a game that drew a full-house at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, scoring 16 of his 19 points in the third quarter where the Gin Kings pulled away after outscoring the Hotdogs, 39-28.
The Gins won the P100,000 prize for the victory, while Helterbrand and Hizon shared the P25,000 reward for being the Players of the Game.
Hizon and Noli Locsin had 16 and 10 points, respectively, in the breakaway third quarter. Hizon hit three three-pointers in that stretch as Ginebra built a 65-53 lead, which ballooned to 89-74 near the end of the period.
Marlou Aquino had 15 points and eight rebounds, Locsin chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds, while Bal David added 12 points for the Ginebra greats, who were coached by Robert Jaworski and son Dudut.
Roger Yap had a game-high 27 points, while Paul Artadi and Tony Boy Espinosa each had 14 points for Purefoods, which was handled by Mon Fernandez.
