PLANS to bring in NBA veteran Hakim Warrick for GlobalPort for the coming PBA Commissioner’s Cup fell through after the American forward opted to sign with Torku Konyaspor in the Turkish Basketball League.

GlobalPort basketball operations head BJ Manalo disclosed to Spin.ph the Batang Pier tried to tap the services of the 10-year NBA veteran, hopeful his athleticism and vast experience can help the team in its campaign in the mid-season conference.

“Nakipag-usap ako nung una (with Warrick’s agent). Wala namang problema sa presyo pero may contract na siya,” Manalo said on Friday.

Torku confirmed signing up the 6-foot-9 Warrick with a tweet on its official twitter account@KonyasporTorku on Wednesday, welcoming the American to the team with a corresponding picture.

Manalo regrets failing to get the 32-year-old Warrick on board as he believes the American with the wide wingspan is a perfect fit for Globalport.

A vital cog on Syracuse’s 2003 NCAA men’s championship run led by Carmelo Anthony, Warrick was picked 19th overall by Memphis during the 2005 NBA draft.

Aside from the Grizzlies, he also played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans and Charlotte Bobcats during his 10-season stint, owning career averages of 9.4 points and 4.0 rebounds in 526 games.

He played last season in China with the Liaoning Jiebao Hunters, where he averaged 20.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assist, before deciding to pack his bags and sign for Torku.

But even with no import in town, Manalo said the Batang Pier have already resumed practice since Monday at the Moro Lorenzo gym inside the Ateneo campus with interim coach Eric Gonzales calling the shots.
