EVEN with a two-game slide and unbeaten Petron its next opponent, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao remains confident the Elasto Painters can recover lost ground in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup.
Guiao said his team has already made some tweaking on its defensive approach heading to its game against the league-leading Boosters on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Game time is at 5:45 p.m.
Petron swept the first round of the eliminations en route to an immaculate 7-0 record.
“We’re not concerned with the losing streak at this point. Ang importante lang sa amin, is grab the rebounds as well as di masyadong maging marami ang extra possessions ng Petron,” said Guiao, whose team dropped its last two games, including an 87-90 defeat to three-time Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text last Tuesday.
Rain or Shine battled Petron in the semifinals of the Governors Cup last season, and obviously had no answer against big man June Mar Fajardo as they lost the series in six games.
And though Guiao already bolstered their roster with the entry of no. 3 overall pick Raymond Almazan, he is still wary of the damage Fajardo can do inside.
“Our concern is June Mar Fajardo because we don’t have a solid physical matchup for him. That’s why we’ll be experimenting on some defensive approached on him. Magpapakita lang kami ng iba-ibang klase ng depensa sa kanya,” added the fiery Rain or Shine coach.
Fajardo has been averaging career-best numbers of 14.5 points, 17.3 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks this season.
On the other hand, Petron coach Gee Abanilla said the Boosters are not going to lower their guards down despite a seven-game win streak.
“We are well aware that Rain or Shine is a very dangerous team, especially coming from a loss,” said Abanilla.
“We have to be vigilant in keeping our focus on the task on hand. Staying true to our identity is what we wish to build for ourselves especially if we want to be successful against a very good and well-coached team like Rain or Shine,” he added.
