ANTIPOLO – Yeng Guiao rued the poor free throw shooting of Rain or Shine in a close loss to TNT at the start of the PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday night.
Guiao pointed out the team’s 18 missed foul shots as the main culprit in the Elasto Painters’ 108-107 setback at the hands of the Tropang Giga at the Ynares Arena.
In all, Rain or Shine was 24-of-42 from the foul line (57 percent), while TNT was 23-of-34 (67 percent).
“We missed 18 free throws and lost by one point. Gusto nating simplehan lang yung analysis nito – out of the 18, if we could have only made two we could have won the game. So yun ang simple analysis,” said Guiao following the heartbreaker.
Guard Andre Caracut, a steady free throw shooter for the Elasto Painters, shot 5-of-10 from the free throw line, the most by any in the team.
“Si Andre unusual yung mag-missed siya ng limang free throws. 5 out of 10 siya, that’s not his true shooting percentage from the free throw (line). Kung nakagawa lang siya ng dalawa pa sa lima na yun, nanalo kami,” said Guiao.
If there’s a positive take Rain or Shine learned from the defeat, it’s the fact that it stayed toe-to-toe with a team Guiao considered a title contender.
The Elasto Painters led by as many as 61-51 in the third quarter and didn’t yield the lead until the final two minutes when Calvin Oftana hit a corner three as TNT finally took the driver’s seat, 106-104.
“The important thing for us is we know we can stay with the big guns,” said Guiao.
“Sayang, malaking isda sana. Nakawala yung malaking isda.”
