Guiao eyes upgrade for 'Extra Rice' frontline with two prized draft picks

RAIN or Shine is one of the shortest teams in the pro league with an average height of 6-1 and a frontline that relies mostly on wide-bodied but undersized centers JR Quinahan and Beau Belga.

Coach Yeng Guiao, though, hopes help will be on the way soon.

Holding two first-round picks in the next PBA rookie draft, Guiao hopes to get a shot at drafting either seven-footer Greg Slaughter or Ian Sangalang to give his 'Extra Rice Inc.' frontline pair the needed upgrade.

“Hindi na kami papasok sa trade para kumuha ng big man. Baka sakali sa draft na lang kami kukuha ng sentro,” said Guiao, hoping one of the two prized picks in Rain or Shine's possession will land in the draft lottery.

Of the two, it is Barako Bull's pick, which the Painters acquired in a previous trade, that has a big chance of turning into gold with the Energy Cola's lackluster showing so far this season.

Rain or Shine's other pick is its own.

Another intriguing pick, that of Globalport, is now owned by San Mig Coffee.

Guiao hinted that if the chance presents itself, he would love to have either Slaughter or Sangalang.

“Malaking chance na ma-address namin this coming draft ang pagkukulang namin sa big man. Yes we are looking at Slaughter and Sangalang,” said Guiao.

“Hopefully ito na talaga ang chance namin na makakuha (ng big man),” added the outspoken coach.

Team co-owner Raymund Yu is also optimistic the Elasto Painters will get lucky in the draft.

“Sana malagay kami dun (sa Top 2), ilang beses na nga naming pinag-uusapan yan. Kasi Slaughter at Sangalang talaga ang pagpipilian namin,” said Yu.

Yu, however, believes the team's plans are bound to change if Bobby Parks, Jr. makes himself available for drafting.

“Kung magpapa-draft na rin si Bobby Ray Parks, Jr, maiiba ang direksyon namin,” he said. “Kasi kahit hindi namin kailangan yun, at may chance kami to tab him, siya ang kukunin namin.

"Tapos bahala na. Iba kasi ang talent nun eh,” Yu added.
