Guiao baffled by Almazan disappearance: 'Di ko alam pinagdaramdam n'ya'

    Oct 10, 2018

LIKE a father concerned about his son, Yeng Guiao said he is as baffled as anyone by the current status of Raymund Almazan at Rain or Shine.

Guiao said he has no idea what's bugging the 6-foot-8 Almazan, who has gone AWOL with the Elasto Painters, both during practices and games, since last week.

Almazan played for Guiao when the coach was still with Rain or Shine, and the two got together in the national team during the last Asian Games and World Cup qualifiers.

"I've coached him before, and I've seen him up close, and I know him personally. Hindi ko rin alam kung bakit dumating sa ganitong sitwasyon," said Guiao on Wednesday after NLEX suffered a 123-97 beating at the hands of Phoenix in the PBA Governors Cup at the Astrodome.

"Hindi ko naman nakitang matampuhin yun. Pinalaki ko sa sigaw at mura yun," he said in between laughs. "At gumaling siya sa ganun. Kaya hindi ko alam kung ano pinagdaramdam niya ngayon."

Almazan until now remains incommunicado with the Elasto Painters.

Guiao said he himself has no idea about the whereabouts of the lanky Rain or Shine big man, saying he has not in any way attempted to reach out to his former player.

The NLEX coach said he had no inkling the situation between team and player would grow worse during their time together.

Asked where he thinks his former player is, Guiao said in jest, "Baka kinidnap. Baka nasa flying saucer siya ngayon. Baka ibe-beam down na lang siya ulit."

The NLEX mentor said if there was really someone who personally knows Almazan, it's Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia, who also handled the 29-year-old native of Orion, Bataan in college with Letran.

"Si coach Caloy actually ang nagsabi sa akin na kunin namin siya sa Rain or Shine dahil nga bata niya," said Guiao.

The national team mentor already messaged Garcia, his former deputy, just to ask about the condition of Almazan.

"Kinamusta ko lang. Sabi niya (Garcia) susubukan nilang ayusin. Susubukan nilang kausapin, pero sila rin wala pang contact," Guiao related.

      But he vouched for Almazan.

"Pero mabait na bata yang si Raymund," said Guiao. "Mabait na bata yan. Kilala ko yan."

Of course Guiao didn't deny coveting Almazan's services if given the chance.

"Hindi naman kaila sa lahat na lahat yata ng teams gusto siya," said Guiao without pressing the matter lest he be accused of tampering with a player with a live contract.
