Guess who's safe, who's not as Romero plots another makeover for GlobalPort

JUST days after announcing the arrival of a new coach, GlobalPort Batang Pier's dynamic team owner Mikee Romero bared that player movements are not far-fetched for the young PBA franchise.

Romero told Spin.ph that GlobalPort management is now in the process of evaluating each of the players based on how they performed in the PBA Philippine Cup, where the Batang Pier finished seventh in the elims before being knocked out by Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals.

"Tuloy-tuloy naman ang evaluation ng team eh," the flamboyant GlobalPort team owner said. "Alam ng bawat player at tao namin 'yun."

But this early, Romero declared he was not contented with the performance of the ballclub, which reached the playoffs for the second straight conference under Junel Baculi (Governors Cup) and interim coach Ritchie Ticzon (Philippine Cup) but came up empty both times.

"It was an improvement of our previous campaign, pero I believe we still could have done better," said Romero, who has won titles in almost every league he participated in like the defunct PBL, ABL and even in the Southeast Asian Games.

Romero bared that the movements will start once he names the new coach to replace Ticzon as the team moves to realign its direction based on the plan and vision of the new coach.

Spin.ph sources have bared that Romero is eyeing University of Santo Tomas head coach Pido Jarencio for the job.

"'Pag dumating na yung bagong coach namin, yun kasi ang first order ... Then we re-plan with him," Romero, a former De La Salle Green Archer and world-class polo player, said.

But if he has his way, Romero hinted that save for his young batch of players, meaning those not older than 26, no one has a "sure spot in the team."

"Yung mga bata, 'yan na 'yung core. RR (Garcia), Terrence Romeo, Nico Salva, Kelly Nabong at Jaypee Belencion, 'yan na ang team namin for the next two years," he said.

"Basta yang mga batang yan ang gusto kong i-develop na bagong Batang Pier," he added.

Asked about veteran stars Sol Mercado and Jay Washington, Romero paused for a moment before saying: 'Andyan pa rin sila!'

"Basta, our goal always is to win ... and winning means bringing home a trophy," he said with a smile.
