BOCUAE – The expectations are high for Greg Slaughter who's seen as the missing link in Ginebra’s quest for a PBA Philippine Cup title.

It looks like he’sup to the challenge.

Slaughter scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting to go with 13 boards and four blocks as he led Ginebra to an 89-78 victory over rival Magnolia in the Christmas Day game on Monday at the Philippine Arena.

Now a full conference since returning from an ACL injury that sidelined him for almost a year, the seven-foot slotman out of Ateneo is ready to make up for lost time.

“I understand that I have a big responsibility now. With one conference behind me after my injury, I feel like I’m back feeling comfortable with everything,” said Slaughter.

“Last conference we won the championship with Justin (Brownlee), that’s great. But now that we’re without him, we’ve got to step up and I’m ready to take on that role,” he added.

Slaughter, however, was quick to temper expectations.

“The most important is we got the win today. It’s only our first game and the goal for us is to win the championship. It’s good to get that first win but we still got a lot of room to improve.”

Ginebra’s failed run to the Philippine cup title last season was attributed to its inability to match up with June Mar Fajardo. With Slaughter back, Ginebra’s chances are seen to be higher.

Slaughter is not having any of it, though.

“I wouldn’t say there’s an individual equalizer. We’re more team-oriented, even when we won the championships, we pride ourselves in getting high assists,” Slaughter continued.

“That’s our calling card, sharing the ball, moving the ball and playing team defense.”
