GREG Slaughter did not have a big offensive night on Sunday but he drew praises from Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone and import Justin Brownlee.

Slaughter finished with only two points and shot 1-of-6 from the field in 17 minutes of play, but the Ginebra big man made his mark on defense. He also had six rebounds and a block in the game.

On a night when Brownlee scored a new PBA career-high 49 points, Cone reserved praise Slaughter during the postgame press conference.

“Best I’ve seen Greg defend in quite a while,” Cone said. “He looks motivated on the defensive end. I just can’t explain why and how big a bonus that is for us when Greg plays defense like that.”

Cone said Slaughter did everything on defense, including defending the guards.

“Going out and guarding guards, he blocked Paul Lee’s jump shot from the corner, I mean, he was just a real active big man defender. And he is really taking the challenge. Really appreciate that part of the game for him,” said Cone.

Brownlee also lauded Slaughter’s play on the defensive end especially on the team’s pick-and-roll defense.

“I think everybody came out and not necessarily had their best game but I think everybody came out and showed great effort. Like Greg didn’t play as well offensively but he did an incredible job of guarding the pick and roll and helping us defensively,” said Brownlee.

Cone said Slaughter’s defense is just what Ginebra needs coming to the stretch run to the playoffs.

“We know we are going to be a great offensive team. We know we can score at anybody. The key for us is can we defend. That’s what we are working on. I think we defended well in the second half,” said Cone.
