ANTIPOLO - Rain or Shine shrugged off a late scare as it held off Blackwater, 98-92, to gain some momentum in the PBA Governors' Cup at the Ynares Center.
The Elasto Painters lost a sizeable lead but made the clutch baskets and necessary stops down the stretch to restore order and notch a second straight win after starting the conference with a loss.
Jeff Chan paced the Painters in scoring but it was JR Quiñahan and Jericho Cruz who hit the biggest baskets as they handed the Elite their second loss in three games.
"There are no easy games anymore," ROS coach Yeng Guiao said. "Just escaping an upset is already a big deal."
Chan heated up early to finish with 20 points, although he was scoreless in the payoff period, where Quinahan took over and scored all but two of his 11 points, including two on a stab that capped five straight ROS points after the Elite came to within two, 86-84.
Cruz scored five of his nine points in the final frame as the balanced local attack made up for Dior Lowhorn being under the weather. Still, the import managed to contribute 20 points and 12 boards in 28 minutes.
Blackwater import Eric Dawson was held to just 14 points on 5-of-17 shooting, although he hauled down 25 boards and completed an all-around effort with six assists, five blocks, and three steals.
Carlo Lastimosa led the Elite with 20 points, while JP Erram added 16 markers, including seven in the fourth to lead his team’s comeback that fell short.
