JONATHAN Grey hit a corner three with 11.5 seconds left as GlobalPort stunned top-seed Rain or Shine, 114-113, on Tuesday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Grey’s triple completed the Batang Pier’s comeback from 16 points down and enabled the eighth-seeded team to drag the twice-to-beat Elasto Painters into a do-or-die match for a place in the semifinals on Thursday.
Maverick Ahanmisi missed three of four free throws in the endgame, leaving the door ajar for GlobalPort to steal the shock win and deal Rain or Shine just its second loss in the entire midseason conference.
“Nanalo, dehado,” a delighted GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio said upon entering the press room for the postgame interview.
Malcolm White had 28 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks in a dominant performance and got a lot of support from the locals, Grey most of all, when the GlobalPort import got his fifth personal foul.
“Talagang nagtrabaho ‘yung mga players especially the local guys when Malcolm got his fifth foul. We became aggressive, and at the same time, we started running. ‘Yun ang strength namin,” said Jarencio.
Grey finished with 22 points including that dagger three he hit after White was double teamed at the post, setting up an open shot at the right corner for the former College of Saint Benilde star.
Stanley Pringle had a near-triple double as he had 21 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists for the Batang Pier, who trailed Rain or Shine by 16 points, 89-73, late in the third quarter.
GlobalPort went on a 10-2 run to finish the third then opened the fourth with eight straight points to tie the game at 91. The Batang Pier again fell behind by eight, 106-98, but somehow closed the gap and tied the match at 110.
Reggie Johnson had 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Raymond Almazan had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Elastopainters, who also got 16 points from James Yap.
