ANTIPOLO – GlobalPort needed only regulation time this time to prove its first win was no fluke as it held off San Miguel Beer, 98-92, to gain some momentum in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Center.

The Batang Pier banked on a blistering start, before showing character in the face of an expected comeback by the Beermen in a fitting follow-up to their double-overtime win over Meralco last Sunday.

Stanley Pringle fired 25 points and hit the crucial baskets at crunch time for the Batang Pier, who dealt the Beermen only their second loss in seven games.

“This is a big, big fish,” Batang Pier’s listed head coach, Johnedel Cardel, said after GlobalPort (2-4) ended a 10-game losing streak to SMB. “Our players played good in the first half and when San Miguel came back, they responded naman.”

“We told the boys at the half that we had to play forty-eight minutes of basketball to win this game,” he added.

The Batang Pier clicked on both ends to establish a 28-8 lead early in the second canto, but saw the defending champions make a comeback behind AZ Reid and turn it into a nip-and-tuck affair.

Reid scattered 41 points, including two on a jumper that pulled the Beermen to within 84-82 halfway through the payoff period, only to see the Batang Pier hold on.

Terrence Romeo shrugged off a sluggish start as he finished with 18 points, while Mike Glover added only registered 15 points in 41 minutes, although the GlobalPort import added 15 boards, three steals, one block, and one assist.

    The scores:

    GLOBALPORT 98 – Pringle 25, Romeo 18, Glover 15, Dehesa 8, Taha 8, Wahington 8, Yeo 8, Mamaril 6, Semerad 2, Kramer 0, Salvacion 0

    SMB 92 – Reid 41, Fajardo 21, Lassiter 15, Cabagnot 6, Santos 4, Heruela 3, David 2, Arana 0, Tubid 0
