GlobalPort, Star still assured of landing coveted rookies under revised trade deal

    Oct 31, 2017
GlobalPort and Star revised their draft day deal, replacing Andreas Cahilig with Gian Abrigo.

GLOBALPORT and Star made a slight revision to the trade the two teams agreed upon during PBA draft day last Sunday.

The Batang Pier sent No. 6 pick Robert Herndon along with Gian Abrigo (4th round) to the Hotshots for Lervin Flores (No. 9) and the second-round pair of Joseph Gabayni (14th) and Julian Sargeant (16th)

On Sunday, lanky big man Andreas Cahilig (24th overall) was part of the package, but under the revised deal, Abrigo was instead sent to Star.

The trade papers had already been sent to the PBA office, although it has yet to be approved by Commissioner Chito Narvasa since the league is on a break.

Flores, the reigning NCAA slam dunk champion from Arellano, was actually the original choice of Globalport at no. 6, but used the pick to select Herdon in what later turned out to be a pre-draft arrangement with the Hotshots, who were eyeing the Fil-Am swingman as their first-round selection.

Star thought the 24-year-old Herndon would no longer be available by the time it selects at no. 9, especially following his impressive stint in the two-day Rookie Combine, where he ended up as part of the Mythical team.

Rain or Shine and Phoenix were picking ahead of Star at nos. 7 and 8, respectively.

In all, the Batang Pier got Flores, Gabayni, Sargeant, Cahilig, and Zach Nicholls from the draft, while the Hotshots landed Herndon, Abrigo, Gywnn Capacio, and Thomas Torres.
