GLOBALPORT is set to trade rookie guard RR Garcia to Barako Bull for vastly improved forward Keith Jensen in a PBA deal that is set to be consummated on Monday night.
Sources said only the signatures of the two teams' top bosses are needed to seal the papers on a deal that, among other things, would break up the long-standing and often controversial partnership between Garcia and college teammate Terrence Romeo.
The former Far Eastern University teammates were drafted by GlobalPort in the first round of this season's draft, but a source privy to the deal said the Garcia trade was initiated by the Batang Pier to define a loaded backcourt that will now have Romeo and Alex Cabagnot running the show.
On the other hand, the arrival of Jensen gives GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio a two-way player who has shown big improvement late in the Fil-American's first season with Barako after his trade from Ginebra.
Jensen played his best basketball in the PBA during his sophomore year, averaging six points and 1.91 rebounds.
Barako also stands to benefit from the arrival of Garcia, a pass-first point guard with a decent touch from the outside who averaged 6.41 points, 1.69 rebounds and 1.62 assists per game in his first season in the league with the Batang Pier.
His impending arrival should boost a Barako Bull backcourt that depended on Denok Miranda and Jeric Fortuna last season.
The trade proposal is expected to be submitted to the PBA office early morning Tuesday for Commissioner Chito Salud’s approval.
