GlobalPort makes it three in a row as Pringle, Krayem run rings around Star Hotshots

    May 12, 2015

TOP rookie Stanley Pringle buried a step-back jumper off Marc Pingris and the Star Hotshots made two miscues in the endgame as GlobalPort escaped with a 91-89 victory on Tuesday to remain unscathed in the PBA Governors Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Coming off the bench for the second straight game since recovering from a right ankle injury, Pringle provided the backcourt stability and solid perimeter shooting,  finishing with 15 points as the Batang Pier won their third straight game in the season-ending conference.

The six-foot Pringle’s jumper gave GlobalPort a 91-87 cushion with 12 seconds to go before Star import Marqus Blakely scored on a putback off Mark Barroca’s missed one-hander five seconds later.

Star had a chance to force overtime after Pringle’s inbound pass went awry, but Barroca lost the ball at the sideline while trying to dispute possession with teammate Blakely.

GlobalPort then dribbled away the last 2.9 seconds of the game as the Star failed to give up a quick foul, sealing the Mikee Romeo-owned franchise’s very first victory over the Purefoods franchise since joining the league at the start of the 2012-13 season.

“Kadarating lang ng import namin (Steven Thomas) pero nag-adjust siya agad. Malaking tulong talaga siya sa amin kahit kahapon lang siya dumating,” said GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio.

Asian import Omar Krayem scored 17 of his team-high 20 points in the second half for the Batang Pier, who lost their first nine games against Cone and the Hotshots.

Thomas, the wide-bodied stand-in import for GlobalPort, contributed 12 points, 17 rebounds and six assists, while Terrence Romeo added 17.

After the game, a fuming Star coach Tim Cone went straight to league commissioner Chito Salud as he tried to question the referees’ decision to give possession on GlobalPort during the dying seconds.

Star, which debuted with an 89-85 win over NLEX last Saturday, committed 22 turnovers.

Blakely led the Hotshots with 19 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and four blocks.

    GlobalPort 91 - Krayem 20, Romeo 17, Pringle 15, Thomas 12, Buenafe 8, Kramer 7, Semerad 3, Miranda 3, Mamaril 2, Isip 2, Jensen 2, Taha 0, Ponferada 0, Pinto 0, Hayes 0.
