GLOBALPORT turned to Shawn Taggart and Terrence Romeo to outduel Phoenix, 125-118, and end its PBA Commissioner’s Cup campaign on a positive note on Friday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The one-two punch both breached the 40-point plateau, with the import Taggart scattering 45 points and Romeo adding 40 markers as the Batang Pier banked on a hot start to snap a seven-game skid and finish with a 3-8 win-loss record.

The Batang Pier, handled by Johnedel Cardel, who’s actually assistant team manager, also eliminated the Fuel Masters out of playoff contention after their victims fell to 3-7.

“I’m thankful na nag-respond sila sa akin,” said Cardel, who called the shots in lieu of head coach Pido Jarencio and assistant coach Eric Gonzales.

Taggart scored in twin digits in each of the four quarters as he finally led the Batang Pier to a victory after failing in his first four tries since replacing stand-in import Calvin Warner.

Romeo, for his part, sparked the Batang Pier’s blistering start as he fired 17 points in the first quarter, before adding at least seven points in the last three quarters.

Their combined performance proved enough to negate the Fuel Masters’ balanced effort that saw them have nine players scoring at least eight points each.
