    Globalport keeping Aguilar, says Mikee

    Jan 31, 2013

GLOBALPORT owner Mikee Romero has made it final: the team will keep Japeth Aguilar.

The sportsman-businessman made the decision after a supposed multi-team trade that was supposed to send Aguilar to Barangay Ginebra was mysteriously scuttled, shortly after Globalport acquired the 6-9 slotman from Talk 'N Text in a straight swap for Rabeh Al-Hussaini.

Sources said tension rose during negotiations in Singapore that lasted well past midnight when an official of San Miguel Corporation stepped in and called off all pending trades involving the organization, aborting Aguilar's move to the Ginebra camp.

Romero, however, declined comment on the matter and instead bared that he no longer has any intentions of trading the agile 6-9 slotman.

“We will keep Japeth," the dashing Globalport owner texted Spin.ph from Singapore early Thursday.

With the scuttled negotiations, Romero said Aguilar, who is still in the US after a failed bid to make it to an NBA D-League team, is now being groomed to be part of the Batang Pier's new nucleus that also includes superstars Gary David, Willie Miller, and Solomon Mercado.

"It was time for Globalport to make a move or we will remain cellar dwellers in the PBA," Romero said. "The new Batang Pier would be rebuilt with Sol Mercado, Japeth Aguilar, and Japeth Aguilar as the focal point."

Mercado became the latest addition to the rejigged Globalport lineup along with Kelly Nabong and JP Belancion in a separate trade with Meralco, which got Batang Pier’s young wingmen Rey Guevarra, Vic Manuel and Josh Vanlandingham as well as a 2015 first-round pick in return.
