PIDO Jarencio made a triumphant return to the head-coaching position of GlobalPort, leading the team to a resounding 92-73 win over Meralco in a rousing start to their PBA Governors Cup campaign at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Sophomore guard Terrence Romeo sparkled for the Batang Pier with a team-high 27 points, including 10 during a critical fourth-quarter stretch to preserve the victory after Meralco mounted a last-ditch comeback.
Jarencio, reinstated to head coach after giving way to Eric Gonzales during the Commissioner's Cup, won a grand total of six games (6-21) in his previous two-and-a-half conference stint with the team.
“I give credit kay coach Eric, sa game plan namin on defense, dahil yung pagbalik ko, sinuportahan nila ako kaya positive yun sa team,” said a beaming Jarencio.
Jarencio also gained a lot of mileage from import Patrick O’Bryant and Palestinian guard Omar Krayem.
The seven-foot O’Bryant, the Golden State Warriors’ ninth pick overall in the 2006 NBA Draft, finished with 15 points and 23 rebounds and Krayem had 18 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while taking over the playmaking chores from the injured Stanley Pringle.
“Credit our imports. Medyo awkward lang galaw ni Patrick, pero magi-improve pa 'yan, saka magkakahangin,” said Jarencio.
Meralco import Andre Emmett led the Bolts with 41 points, but failed to get the much-needed local support as the team missed the services of Fil-Am guard Jared Dillinger.
Iranian import Benny Koochoie also failed to play as his clearance from Iran's Super League failed to arrive in time.
