A DETERMINED GlobalPort squad unleashed a crippling second-half offensive to crush expansion team Blackwater, 87-72, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Veteran guard Alex Cabagnot ignited the Batang Pier in his return from injury, putting together a fine all-around game of 11 rebounds, nine points and nine assists as GlobalPort posted back-to-back victories for the first time under the watch of Pido Jarencio.
Ronjay Buenafe and rookies Anthony Semerad and Stanley Pringle also took turns abusing the Elite defense in the second half, scoring from inside and out to lead GlobalPort to a 3-2 (win-loss) card.
“Nandito na ang right personnel, yung mga players, kaya siguro wala naman kaming pupuntahan kundi pataas, kasi galing kami sa ilalim, kaya all-out na lahat,” said a beaming Jarencio.
The three victories enabled Jarencio to surpass his two-win total during the Batang Pier’s two previous conferences under him.
The Batang Pier were energetic on both ends of the floor, holding the woeful Elite to just 38 percent shooting from the field (29-of-76), while enjoying a sizeable 51-39 lead in the rebounding department.
Buenafe led GlobalPort with 17 points, Semerad chipped in 16, while Pringle added 14, five boards, five assists and three steals.
Bryan Faundo and Bambam Gamalinda led the winless Elite (0-5) with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
