GLOBALPORT accomplished what it failed to do in regulation as it dispatched Barako Bull, 105-91, in overtime to establish its first winning streak in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
The Batang Pier had a chance to put the game to bed in the fourth quarter, but saw Barako Bull star JC Intal make a tough turnaround jumper to force an extension, where they finally unleashed a run to pull away with their second straight victory after starting the conference with a loss.
The Energy failed to replicate a stunning come-from-behind 82-79 victory over Ginebra as they dropped to 1-2 (win-loss).
“Ang Barako nakakatakot na team din talaga yan,” Batang Pier coach Pido Jarencio said. “Siguro nag-extra effort lang kami nung overtime para manalo.”
Terrence Romeo waxed hot in the extra session where he scored eight of his 21 points to lead the Batang Pier’s late surge.
Stanley Pringle sustained his impressive play, scattering 19 points, a career-high 17 boards, six assists, and two steals in 43 minutes.
Willy Wilson scored the first basket in overtime, a short stab, to give the Energy an 87-85 lead, but the Batang Pier finally found their killer’s instinct as they finished the game on a 20-4 salvo that suddenly turned the nip-and-tuck affair into a rout.
Intal and Wilson finished with 17 points apiece, while Jervy Cruz added 13 markers in a losing effort for the Energy.
