    GlobalPort rides Pringle, Romeo scoring to pile more misery on winless Star

    GLOBALPORT waxed hot from the get-go and never let up in hacking out a 91-84 wire-to-wire victory that kept Star still winless in the PBA Governors Cup Friday night.

    The Batang Pier set the tone for the match early on behind the hot hands of their prolific backcourt tandem of Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle, which presided over a telling first-quarter run.

    After just 12 minutes of play, Globalport was already way ahead of Star, 29-8, before enduring the best the Hotshots could offer.

    It was the second straight win for the unbeaten Batang Pier, who tied idle Rain or Shine at the top of the standings.

    The Hotshots fell to 0-2 under new coach Chito Victolero and in the company of Mahindra at the cellar.

    "The key here is were able to dictate the tempo from the start," said GlobalPort coach Franz Pumaren.

    Pringle led all Globalport scorers with 24 points, half of them in the first quarter when the Batang Pier went on a huge scoring tear. Romeo added 18 and with eight assists, but committed seven turnovers.

    Pumaren however, played down the early success the team is having under him at the moment.

    “It’s still an early gauge for us,” he said. “The real test will be in the coming few games, but this is definitely a great springboard for us.”

    Veteran Marc Pingris showed the way for Star with 19 points and eight rebounds, new acquisition Aldrech Ramos with 18, and rookie Jio Alalon with 13, six rebounds, and five assists.

    The Hotshots were able to cut the deficit to as low as nine, the last at 89-80 in the final seconds of the match, before Pringle scored on a lay-up for the insurance basket.
