GLENN Capacio will be the Freddie Roach in Manny Pacquiao's corner when Kia Motors makes its PBA debut next season.

Capacio, 50, is a former defensive whiz of Purefoods back in the nineties who has had head-coaching experience in both the college leagues (Far Eastern University) and in the PBA (GlobalPort).

After leaving GlobalPort at the end of last season, he will be tasked to guide Pacquiao when the boxing hero makes his long-awaited debut as Kia Motors' head coach in the pro league.

Capacio said his one-conference stint as interim coach of the Batang Pier and more than one season as assistant coach taught him valuable lessons that he hopes to impart to another newcomer ballclub like Kia.

“Marami akong natutunan sa isang conference na pag-head coach ko, at saka yung mga conferences na rin na nag-assistant ako. And sa tingin ko, na-prepare na ako dun kahit paano,” Capacio told Spin.ph as Kia Motors continues to hold tryouts for select players every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The many-time All-Defensive team member went 1-13 in his only season as GlobalPort coach but said he has nothing to be ashamed of considering the franchise was then still in its infancy stage.

“Wala akong pinagsisisihan sa lahat ng ginawa ko dun (GlobalPort). No choice lang ako that time kasi wala rin naman kaming gaanong players,” recalled Capacio.

He now faces the same challenge at Kia, which will have to battle league giants led by newly-minted grand slam champion San Mig, Rain or Shine, Talk ‘N Text, and San Miguel Beer with a team that will be culled mainly from the dispersal draft.

But unlike the successful partnership of Roach and Pacquiao, Capacio's team-up with the 'Pacman' is expected to be a rough one considering the amount of talent at their disposal.

Capacio, though, said all he wants is to see a Kia team that will keep punching, no matter the odds.

“Basta kahit kulang tayo sa talent, ang gusto namin sa team na ito, 'yung lumalaban. Siyempre, talagang ganun naman kapag bagong team,” he added.

The soft-spoken former FEU star has also asked management to temper its expectations since Kia will still have to split the talent available in the dispersal draft with fellow expansion squad Blackwater.

“Kailangan din ng konting pasensya for management. Pero alam naman nila yun, lalo pa limitado ang mga big men,” he said.

Blackwater and Kia will try to fill up its respective rosters when the dispersal draft is held on Friday at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City.
