DON'T be fooled by the pretty face and her sweet aura. When it comes to competition, broadcaster Ginger Conejero is not all sugar and spice and everything nice.
“I tend to cheer lalo na kapag nadadala sa game. Nanonood kasi talaga ako ng game,” said Ginger, a former Miss Earth Philippines Air turned TV host and girlfriend of Petron star guard Alex Cabagnot.
Ginger not only shows up during Petron matches, but she is also very much involved in the action, cheering lustily each time Cabagnot or any Petron player makes a big basket.
She also makes it a point to watch as many Petron matches as she can, oftentimes rushing from the ABS-CBN compound to the Big Dome as soon as she wraps up her television work.
The popular broadcaster said she knows how important it is to enjoy such support, having been privileged to get the same backing from her dad when she was still involved in sports growing up.
“When I had competition, I’d really appreciate na every single meet, yung Papa ko andoon. Yung Mama ko, sometimes lang kasi her work schedule wouldn’t allow her to watch all the times," Ginger told Spin.ph.
“But every single meet na sasali ako, yung Papa ko, every competition, sometimes talagang mag-a-absent yun sa trabaho or mag-ha-half day yun specially if it’s a really big meet,” she added.
The TV host is also very knowledgeable about sports, having played volleyball, basketball, and swimming in grade school and competing in several swim meets in high school in San Francisco.
“Kasi I don’t think girls should be just limited to the make-up room or high heels. I don’t think we should be boxed into a certain role that doesn’t allow us to maybe do what guys do or push our limits, our own physical limits,” she said.
It is this same competitive nature, Ginger said, which she brings to her work.
“I like to be competitive even pagdating sa stories, pagdating sa coverages," she said. "'Pag ipapadala ako by chance yung sa medyo investigative or medyo renegade yung style of covering, parang wala kaming karapatang andon but we have to get some footage, 'yun ang mga nagugustuhan ko, 'yun 'yung nacha-challenge ako.”
