CHRISTIAN Standhardinger scored the winning basket at the buzzer as defending champion Barangay Ginebra eked out a dramatic 87-85 win over NorthPort Friday night in the PBA Philippine Cup.

    Ginebra vs NorthPort recap

Standhardinger got the rebound after the Batang Pier clamped down on Stanley Pringle, who shot an airball as time was running down, and managed to put up the shot just as time expired.

The Kings' second win in four outings also came at the expense of the team's first meeting against former teammate Greg Slaughter.

“It looked a little bleak there,” admitted coach Tim Cone in the post-game presser, aware how the Kings had to rally back from a 13-point first half deficit and appeared on the brink of losing it when high-flying rookie Jamie Malonzo soared high for what seemed to be an easy slam off a transition with nine seconds left and the game tied at 85.

But Japeth Aguilar contested the shot and got a piece of the ball, with Standhardinger grabbing the rebound to set up Ginebra’s final offensive play.

“It looked really bleak, it looked like were going to lose the game. But Japeth hustles down and came from nowhere and blocks the dunk,” Cone recalled of the sequence.

Pringle topscored for Ginebra with 24 points, LA Tenorio with 20 and seven assists. Aguilar with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Standhardinger with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.

NorthPort suffered a second straight loss for a 1-3 record despite the 23-point effort of Robert Bolick.

The 7-foot Slaughter had another double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds as he faced his former team for the first time since being traded to the Batang Pier in exchange for the 6-foot-8 Standhardinger.

Another former Ginebra player in Jerrick Balanza also had a fine game for NorthPort with 14 points and was responsible for the team’s early surge in the first half along with Bolick and Sidney Onwubere.

NorthPort missed the services of Kevin Ferrer and Paolo Taha.
