BARANGAY Ginebra recorded its first win following a 110-95 victory over Meralco on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings fell behind by as many as 15 points but recovered just in time thanks to big runs in the second half to pull off the win.

Justin Brownlee finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists for the Kings, who bounced back from their overtime defeat against Blackwater just last Friday.

The Kings outscored the Bolts, 39-17, in the third quarter, including a 12-0 start to a 55-54 lead with Brownlee scoring seven in that period. Sol Mercado also helped the Kings engineer that fightback by scoring six of his 14 points in that pivotal quarter.

“We played about as badly as we could in that first half. We didn’t look like we had any fight whatsoever. It was so discouraging,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone, whose team was down, 35-20, in the first half.

“But then we played with so much fight in the second half. Couldn’t be prouder of this group in terms of getting that game around,” Cone added.

Gani Lawal had 38 points and 20 rebounds in a losing cause for the Bolts, who dropped to 1-2.
