SCOTTIE Thompson had a double-double in another game to remember as Barangay Ginebra held off Magnolia in overtime, 97-93, on Sunday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Thompson scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as he took over in overtime while battling a bad case of cramps on one foot, helping the Gin Kings overcome a sizzling Magnolia rally led by Jio Jalalon.

Jalalon brought Magnolia back from a six-point deficit in the final minute of regulation, hitting the three-pointer from two steps beyond the arc that tied the score at 85-all with 4.2 seconds remaining.

Magnolia, however, simply had no answer for Thompson and Japeth Aguilar in overtime as the Gin Kings picked up their second straight win to improve to 5-3 (win-loss).

“Well, that was a game for the ages,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone. “I guess Manila Clasico is always a big game but sometimes it doesn’t live up to the hype. Certainly, it lived up to the hype today.”

The win not only allowed Ginebra to stay in the top six, avoiding a twice-to-beat disadvantage in the quarterfinals, but it also put the Kings in contention for the last twice-to-beat advantage in the next round.

At 3-5, Magnolia fell to eighth place in a tie with Alaska as NLEX (4-5) moved up to fifth place after a win over Blackwater in the opening game.

Ginebra regained its composure after that Jalalon basket, opening the extra period with a 6-3 run for a 91-88 lead. Jalalon scored to cut the lead to one, but Thompson drilled a triple to put the Kings ahead, 94-90.

Magnolia scored only one field goal after that, with Aguilar converting a slam dunk to put the finishing touches to the win.

Aguilar added 16 points and 12 rebounds on a night LA Tenorio shattered the all-time record for most consecutive games played.

Mark Barroca had 23 points, while Jalalon scored 22 points in a losing cause.
